Peru Backpacker Tour 17 days

If you decide to make this journey, you will see all the highlights of Peru. You will visit the highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, and the ancient capital of the Inca-empire, Cusco. Besides the Sacred Valley the remarkable archaeological Inca-site, you can admire on of the seven world wonders, the ruined city Machu Picchu.

Please, take note that this trip has the same itinerary as “Magical Peru Tour”. The difference is that the Backpacker tour only includes tourist transports.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Arrival with the airplane in the capital of Peru. Your guide is going to pick you up with a welcome drink. We take you to your hotel and you will gain the first impression of this city. Depending on the time of arrival, in the evening we can head out to enjoy the night life in Lima, including Parque Kennedy, the “Calle de las Pizzas” and some of the many excellent bars and restaurants or even we only recover from the long journey.

Day 2: Lima – City Tour - Paracas
Today we start our trip in Lima. We learn more about both colonial and modern Lima. The trip begins at the Plaza Mayor in the centre, where we also visit the government palace, the municipal hall and the archbishop' residence. After that we will explore the scary catacombs of San Francisco. Our next aim are the Plaza San Martin and the Lima cathedral. After our city tour we will head along to Paracas. During this trip, we will stop to have lunch, to recover at the beach and to buy fresh fruits and beverages at a regional market. You have the evening for your own. If you have the energy you can head out to sample the nightlife.

Day 3: Paracas – Ballestas Islands – Nazca
After the breakfast we will take a boat to visit the Ballestas Islands, where we can observe various birds, sea lions and penguins. These animals have found their natural habitat in the idiosyncratic rock foundations who is considered as one of the most attractive landscapes of the Peruvian coast. We also can see the port of San Martin and the giant drawing of mysterious “candle holder” on the slopes of an enormous sand dune.
At midday we continue our journey towards Nazca, making a stop to visit a vineyard in order to learn more about the production of wine and pisco, the national beverage of Peru. After that we have the possibility to cool ourselves down in the oasis of Huacachina. We will spend the night in Nazca.

Day 4: Nazca – Arequipa
In the morning we take a flight over the impressive and mysterious Nazca lines. The Nazca lines are lines between 25 and 275m in the desert sand, which look like animals and figures from above. You can see various animals like condors, cranes, pelicans, sea gulls, monkeys or a spider, a dog and lamas. After the flight we continue our trip towards Arequipa, where we spend the night.

Day 5: Arequipa
After our breakfast we will visit the so-called “White City”. Arequipa is the second city in Peru at an altitude of 2,325 meters above sea level. An highlight are the three volcanoes that surround Arequuipa, the Chachani, the Misti and the Pichu Pichu. We will visit the Plaza de Armas, one of the most beautiful in Peru, with its cathedral, the labyrinthine monastery of Santa Catalina, La Comañia church and the bustling San Camilo market. The night is free to enjoy the local restaurants and bars.

Day 6: Arequipa
You have the day to yourself. Explore the city on your own, relax on the Plaza de Armas or visit the mummy Joanita. Another opportunity is a rafting tour on the river Chili.

Day 7: Arequipa – Chivay
It's an early start today, leaving from Arequipa in shared tourist transport around 3:00 am in order to visit the deepest ravine of the world (3400m), the Colca Canyon. On our way we will pass the Pampa Cañahuas and the nature reserve Aguada Blanca, the home of Vikunjas and Alpacas. Besides, we will see how the original habitants maintain their culture and tradition. We will spend the night in Chivay.

Day 8: Chivay – Cruz del Condor – Puno
Early in the morning we head on towards the Cruz del Condor, where we see the flight of the majestic Andean condor, rising on the morning thermals in search of food. The Condor is the world's largest predatory bird with a wing-spread of 3,20 meters. After taking photos we will return. During our return we will visit the villages Yangue, Coporque, Achoma and Maca. There we will learn more about the traditional lifestyle of the inhabitants, that has not changed much. We will take lunch in a local restaurant. After that we will continue our trip towards Puno. We will stop at the Bosque de Piedra, the stones forest of Imata. We can see flamingos and other birds.

Day 9: Puno – Lake Titicaca - Uros Floating Islands - Islan Amantani
Today we take a boat trip to visit the islands of the world's highest navigable lake (3.800m). Our first aim are the swimming islands Uros. The habitants build their islands, as well as their houses and boats on their own with reed. Later we head towards the island Amantani, where we will be welcomed by a local family. In the afternoon we will take a walk to one of the island`s pre-Incan temples and then in the evening enjoy a show of local folk music and spend the night with local families.

Day 10: Lake Titicaca - Island Taquile - Puno
After breakfast we board our launch to the island of Taquile, where we can observe local people's customs including the local weaving for which Taquile is famous, and agricultural techniques which have been used since pre-Incan times. We have some time for lunch and in the afternoon explore the island's hills and archaeological sites. We then return to Puno to spend the night.

Day 11: Puno – Cuzco
From Puno we head to Cuzco in a tourist bus, stopping by a number of interesting archeological sites and picturesque Andean villages on the way. We spend the night in the hotel in Cuzco.

Day 12: Cuzco City Tour
The morning is free in order to relax and to acclimatise. In the evening you take a guided tour and visit the main place, the cathedral and Koricancha, the former centre of the Inca-empire. Besides, you visit the city Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, the amphitheatre and the stronghold Sacsayhuaman, which is located at a hill of Cuzco. It is known for its stones, that are carved with precision. We spend another night in Cuzco.

Day 13: Cuzco – Sacred Valley – Ollantaytambo
Today we can see the beautiful ruins of the Sacred Valley. These ruins show the magnificent architecture of the incas. In Ollantaytambo we see rock walls, temples and palace. We will spend the night in a hotel in the Sacred Valley.

Day 14: Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
We get up early to take the train to the village of Aguas Calientes, that lies at the foot of Machu Picchu. From there we ascend to one of the seven wonders of the modern world. The ruined city was discovered by an American, Hiram Bingham in 1911. After a guided tour of three hours, you will have some time to discover the ruins by your own. Later we will return to Aguas Calientes, where we spend the night.

Day 15: Aguas Calientes – Cuzco
You will have the possibility to organise your day individually, before we will return to Cuzco. Early, in the morning you can see the sunrise and have a look around the town of Aguas Calientes. Later you can relax in the hot springs. Besides, we can recommend the trek to the waterfalls of Mandor. The falls are reached in 1,5 hours by a trail that follows the railway lines alongside the rushing Vilcanota River. The fall is formed by the crystal waters that descend from the peak of the mountain Yanantin. We will spend the night in Cuzco.

Day 16: Cuzco
Today, you deserve a free day in order to relax, shop and enjoy your last day in the beautiful Imperial City of Cuzco. We recommend the Casa Inca Garcilazo de la Vega, the church of San Blas and the surrounding barrio, known for its artists and craftsmen.

Day 17: Cuzco - Lima - home.
A morning flight leaves from Cusco to connect with international flights from Lima. We hope you've had a magical experience!

What to bring:
