Trekking in Peru, 17 days. On this journey through Peru you will experience Peru`s incredible nature and its historical background. You will do a two-days trekking in the Colca Canyon, the beautiful Ausangate trek, visit Machu Picchu and the Andes, as well as Peru’s major cities Lima, Arequipa and Cusco.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Lima
Arrival in Lima and transfer to the hotel. Our tour guide will pick you up from the airport. In the hotel, you can recover from the flight. Depending on the arrival time, you can visit the modern Lima, the Kennedy Park or the "Pizzaroad".

Day 2: Lima - Arequipa
Today we visit the historic center of Lima, through the old Plaza de Armas, the embankment of the River Rimac (in Quechua means the river Rimac Mayu). Then we visit the Cathedral of Lima, where you can see the tomb of Francisco Pizarro and the Catacombs in the Church of San Francisco. The rest of the afternoon is free until we fly to Arequipa, where we check in to our hotel.

Day 3: Arequipa - City Tour
At an altitude of 2,325 metres above sea level, Arequipa is Peru’s second largest city. The city has an amazing colonial history, and is surrounded by three volcanoes: el Misti, el Chachani y el Pichu Pichu. We start our visit of the "White City" by the plaza de Armas, one of the most beautiful in South America. Then, we visit the cathedral, an example of the Peruvian architecture from the 19th century where a lot of precious gold and silver treasures are kept, and the Compañia church, an old Jesuit temple, maybe one of the most important in Arequipa for its history, tradition and its beautiful façade.
Then, we will go through the convent of Santa Catalina, "a small city in the city" from the 17th century. We will walk through the many gardens and patios and explore former quarters. About 20 sisters still live there, whereas this convent can welcome up to 500 sisters.

Day 4: Arequipa – Chivay – San Juan de Chuccho – Oasis
You will be picked up from your hotel at 3 a.m. to start the three-hour journey to Chivay where we will have our breakfast. Afterwards we head to the Cruz del Condor to spot the world’s largest bird flying. We head further into the Colca valley to Pampa San Miguel (3,400m amsl) where we start our four-hour hike to San Juan de Chuccho (2,200 amsl). There we can relax, take photos of the Canyon and enjoy our lunch. Afterwards we have another 3 hours to go to the Oasis Sangalle (2,100 amsl), passing by the small villages of Cosnirgua and Malata (2,450 amsl). We have the possibility to take a bath in the hot springs while waiting for our dinner. If we are lucky and the sky is clear, we will see a lot of bright stars and the Milky Way.

Day 5: Cañón del Colca - Cruz del Cóndor - Chivay - Puno
Today we start hiking at 4a.m. and leave the oasis. We will climb up the canyon by moonlight and with headlamps. If you are too exhausted, you have the option to ascent on the back of a mule. When we arrive in Cabanaconde, we will have breakfast. Afterwards our transport will bring us to Chivay. On the way we will take a few photos of the beautiful Colca Valley from various lookout points. In Chivay we have our lunch before we take the tourist transport to Puno.

Day 6: Puno - Lago Titicaca (Uros Islands and Island Taquile) – Puno
Today we take a boat trip around Lake Titicaca and its islands. We visit the floating Uros Islands, entirely made out of reeds and inhabited by descendants of the Aymara culture. From there we continue to the island of Taquile, where we can observe local people’s customs including the local weaving for which Taquile is famous for, and agricultural techniques which have been used since pre-Incan times. We have our lunch and in the afternoon explore the island's hills and archaeological sites. We then return to Puno to spend the night.

Day 7: Puno - Cusco
From Puno we head to Cusco in a tourist bus, stopping by a number of interesting archaeological sites and picturesque Andean villages on the way. We spend the night in a hotel in Cusco.

Day 8: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Sacred Valley - Cusco
Today we visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including the colourful markets of Pisac, and the towns of Calca, Yucay and Urubamba. In the afternoon we visit the impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo, which used to be an administrative, agricultural and religious centre for the Incas. Here we can see rock walls, temples and palaces.

Day 9: Cusco – Urcos – Tinqui – Upis (Ausangate Trek)
We leave the imperial city of Cusco quite early in the morning and go to the east. We observe some beautiful and continuously changing landscapes and go through little traditional villages, Incas and pre-Incas archaeological sites. En Tinqui (3850 metres), we meet our donkey-tender and cooks, who will accompany us during the whole trek, as well as the animals carrying our camping gear and personal belongings. We start our first day of trekking and climb up to the Upis community (4400 metres). The landscape surrounding us is very typical of the region of puna with a lot of ichu (dry grass from the Andean's highlands) and wind. The view on the Ausangate is spectacular. Through our walk and in the village of Upis, we meet local people who will tell us about their textiles handcrafts as well as explain the symbols in those works and how they are related to nature and to the Andeans' beliefs. Discovering those traditions and costumes, which come directly from the Incas, is very impressive. In Upis, you also have the opportunity to relax in natural hot springs.

Day 10: Upis – Col de Arapa – Lagune Ausangate (Ausangate Trek)
We start by climbing up, with a beautiful sight on the major Apu, the Ausangate. We enjoy the beauty and strength of the south side of the Andes. When we arrive at the Arapa pass (4800 metres), we can have a look at this incredible mountainous region. We go down on the other side of the pass and pass by many beautiful lagoons. After having lunch, we climb again until we reach the Extreme Ausangate pass (4850 metres) then go to another lake, the Ansangate lagoon, where we camp.

Day 11: Laguna Ausangate – Col Palomani – Jampa (Ausangate Trek)
Today is both the most beautiful and the hardest day of the trek: we climb until we reach the highest peak of our journey, the Palomani pass (5200 metres), from where the view on the glaciers and the Apu Ausangate is the reward for our efforts. Then, we go back to the Pampa Finaya valley and finally arrive in Jampa (4700 metres), where we camp.

Day 12: Jampa – Col de Campa – Pacchanta (Ausangate Trek)
The Campa pass (5100 metres) is the challenge of today ! We walk through magnificent andean landscapes, where lamas, alpacas and vicunas quietly eat, surrouded by glaciers and by the spectacular snow-caped Colqecruz. Then, we go through several lagoons, before arriving to the Pacchanta community (4350 metres), where we will camp and relax in hot springs. We end the day by eating a traditional meal.

Day 13: Pacchanta – Tinqui – Cusco (Ausangate Trek)
After having had our breakfast, we slowly go on to reach the village of Tinqui (3900 metres), the final point of our trek. We take our vehicle back to Cusco. On the way back, we stop in Tipon or in Saylla, where we will have the opportunity to taste traditional meals of the region, such as cuy (guinea pig) or chicharrón (made with pork)

Day 14: Cusco - Aguas Calientes
In the morning you can visit the beautiful center of Cusco. Afterwards we head to Ollantaytambo and take a train to Aguas Calientes. In the evening you can relax in the thermal baths.

Day 15: Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco
Today's the day we've been waiting for. We get up early to take the bus from the village of Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu - one of the modern seven world wonders. After a guided tour and free time to explore the ruins, we return to Aguas Calientes, from where we head back to Cusco.

Day 16: Cusco City Tour
After breakfast the morning is free. In the afternoon we take a guided tour through the city. We visit the K’oricancha or Temple of the Sun - the most important Incan religious centre - and archaeological sites including Kenco, Sacsayhuaman, Puca-Pucara y Tambomachay, absorbing something of the mystic tradition of the Incas in each site.

Tag 17: Cusco - Lima
Today we take a flight from Cusco to Lima
